Like in adults, the weight status (underweight, normal weight, overweight, obesity) determination in children is made based on weight and height (body mass index). However, unlike in adults, whose cut-points are the same regardless of age or sex, the cut-points for determining the weight status in children varies with age and sex.
An Excel-based classifier of BMI into sex- and age-specific weight status in youths aged 2-18 years according to the World Obesity Federation (formerly IOTF) cut-points © contains an spreadsheet (.xlsx) to automatically calculated the body mass index of up to 2000 children between 2 and 18 years old. Moreover, based on the cut-points of the World Obesity Federation (1,2) and using the age, sex, weight and height values, the spreadsheet automatically determines each children’s weight status on 8 different categories: underweight 3, underweight 2, underweight 1, normal weight, overweight, obesity 1, obesity 2 and obesity 3.
