The main objective of the ENERGYCO study is to examine the effects of a school-based intervention program using cycling as a mode of transportation on basal metabolism and different physical and psychosocial health variables in adolescents from Andalusia.
ENERGYCO, which will span a total of 3 years, will validate in its phase 1 a protocol to assess the energy expenditure of active commuting to and from school in high school students (12 to 16 years old), as well as quantify the specific energy expenditure of each mode of transportation (walking, cycling, passive, etc.). Subsequently, during phase 2, a random sample of high school students (12 to 16 years old) from 3 Andalusian provinces (Granada, Almería, and Jaén) will be recruited. During this phase, the change in basal metabolism following an intervention based on 8 weeks of cycling to school will be evaluated, including incentives and an educational strategy to improve adherence to the intervention program. Additionally, the aim is to observe the effect of this intervention on different health variables, such as levels of physical activity, body composition, muscle strength, cardiorespiratory capacity, blood pressure, physical literacy, and variables related to the psychosocial health of adolescents.
