Jonatan R. Ruiz has received the 21st Caja Rural Granada Foundation Health Sciences Prize for a study on the benefits of intermittent fasting in individuals with overweight and obesity, recently published in Nature Medicine

The clinical trial, conducted in Granada and Pamplona with 197 adults, examined the effects of different time-restricted eating schedules combined with a Mediterranean diet on visceral adipose tissue and cardiometabolic health. The results show that advancing dinner time (early time-restricted eating) improves glucose regulation and reduces subcutaneous fat, confirming that intermittent fasting is an effective, safe, and well-tolerated strategy for weight loss and health improvement in individuals with obesity.

Jonatan R. Ruiz emphasized that this award recognizes the efforts of a multidisciplinary team and provides motivation to continue researching accessible and effective strategies for treating obesity, thereby contributing to improved health and quality of life.

The jury highlighted the rigorous methodology, clinical impact, and applicability of this study as an accessible, low-cost public health strategy.
