Active mobility

Bikeability

Abstract

Cycling for commuting purpose shows relevant health benefits. However, this behaviour is not common among Spanish adolescents because of the lack of safety perception and the low tradition to commute by cycling in Spain. The main aim of this project is to promote cycling like a mode of commuting. For achieving this aim, workshops to teach cycling in the city for adolescents (developed throughout school settings) and adults are implemented. These workshops are an adaptation of the British bikeability program, which includes three different sessions. A first theoretical session, in which the bicycle is presented as a mode of commuting displaying the advantages and analysing the disadvantages. A second session focused on cycling and driving skills which are developed in a circuit out from traffic, where students practice the different skills that they will need in the next session. And a third and final session where students have to solve different preset situations under traffic conditions.
